Speed Watch Activity – Hayfield Road, ChapelThis afternoon, our newly appointed Community Speed Watch volunteers were out conducting a Speed Watch session on Hayfield Road, Chapel, alongside PC Schofield. During the one-hour session, a total of 289 vehicles passed through the area, with only one vehicle exceeding the speed limit. This is a very encouraging result and reflects well on the vast majority of drivers using this stretch of road. What is Community Speed Watch?Community Speed Watch is a locally led initiative that enables trained volunteers to work alongside the police to help address speeding concerns in their own neighbourhoods. Volunteers use approved equipment to monitor vehicle speeds in areas where there have been concerns raised by residents. Importantly, Speed Watch is about education, not enforcement. It is designed to: Vehicles recorded as exceeding the speed limit may receive an educational letter, reminding the driver of the limit and the importance of safe driving. Persistent or high-level speeding concerns can also help inform future road safety work by the police. Why Speed Watch is a good thingSpeed Watch: Today’s session was a very positive first deployment for our new volunteers, and the low number of speeding vehicles shows how effective visibility and community engagement can be in promoting safer driving habits.
